Sarah, Matron Saint of Complicated Women

I cannot be all things
to all people
I am not made
only of sugar and spice,
My life is full –
full of regret and disappointment,
full of rage and silence
full of truth and lies
full of love and jealousy
full of joy and faith.
So yes, I am rather complicated.
Aren’t you?

About Sarah’s creation:

Sarah was the second mosaic I begin, and originally she was the matron saint of the old broads of the church, and tilted, with a red background.  It didn’t work.  So I cut her in half and made her stand straight up, and added a shawl for more contrast, and gave her a background of some papyrus paper I found at Goodwill, a nod to biblical Sarah’s journey to Egypt.

She still isn’t right, and I think that may have to do with my own feelings about the biblical Sarah.  She endured a lot.  She also inflicted no small amount of pain on others, especially Hagar and Ishmael.  She’s complicated, and not yet finished.  Just like most of us, I suppose.
